The S. June Smith Foundation was established in 1993 to support Lancaster County children with developmental disabilities and delays. It is an independent charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of community leaders. The S. June Smith Foundation is committed to continuing the vision of Dr. S. June Smith by providing financial support, through grants, to local non-profit organizations providing services and opportunities to children with developmental needs.

Mission statement

The mission of the S. June Smith Foundation is to: (1) support the essential services and programs of the S. June Smith Center and other Lancaster County agencies that provide specialized education, training, and therapy to children with developmental disabilities and delays and (2) establish an endowment for the protection of programs for Lancaster County children with developmental disabilities and delays.

Preserving the Legacy of Dr. S. June Smith

Dr. S. June Smith was a psychologist that developed innovative services for children with developmental needs in Lancaster County. In 1965, she helped to establish preschool programs for children with developmental needs, known today as the S. June Smith Center. The S. June Smith Center has grown to include additional early intervention services. Most recently, the S. June Smith Center has become part of the Excentia family and continues to provide those services.

Dr. S. June Smith received her B.S. in early childhood education from Temple University and her Master’s degree from Columbia Teachers College. In 1945, she was awarded a Doctorate of Psychology from Penn State University. She retired in 1971 after 30 years as director of special pupil services for the former Lancaster County Public Schools, now know as the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13. She passed away on April 25, 2001 at the age of 95.
